Strike: FG, ASUU Keep Mum After Closed-Door Meeting

The leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU and the Federal Government on Thursday kept mum on the outcome of their meeting.

The union and the federal government met to end the lingering strike which has halted academic activities for nine months.

The meeting which started about 5:13 pm and ended around 10 pm was organized by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, after it was earlier postponed twice.

Shortly after the closed-door meeting, the federal government and leadership of ASUU refused to release a statement on the development.

Recall that the Federal Government during the November 27 meeting promised to pay the union N40 billion as the Earned Allowance and N30bn for the revitalization of the university system bringing the total payment to N70 billion.

It also promised to pay the arrears of salaries to the lecturers.

ASUU in its reaction promised to consult it’s members and get back to the government on their decision.

The President of the union, Abiodun Ogunyemi, however, accused the government of not fulfilling its promises.

Ngige while reacting to the allegation, noted that the union pledged to call off its strike before December 9 after the offers made to it during their meeting.

He also said the government had fulfilled all the pledges made to ASUU.
