Nigerian artistes continue to blossom and push the boundaries of their careers. Some of them, musicians, have created platforms to groom others and for them to show their skills to the world. Weekend Magazine takes a look at five of them.
Olamide’s music is different from the norm as he sings and raps in his native language, Yoruba. He owns his own record label, YBNL which is an acronym for Yahoo Boy No Laptop. He was previously signed to Coded Tunez record label before founding his own. Olamide has over time signed artistes such as Adekunle Gold, Lil Kesh and Lyta to the label. FireBoy DML, Picazo, Yomi Blaze and Temmie Ovwasa are currently signed to YBNL.
Wizkid, aka Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, is a talented and well-loved Nigerian artiste. He doubles as a songwriter and has written songs for celebrities like Major Lazer, Drake and Rihanna. He was signed under Banky W’s record label, EME, before he founded his own label, Star Boy Entertainment in March 2013. Artistes such as Maleek Berry and L.A.X and signed under the label with Legendary Beats and Maleek Berry as producers under the label.
Cohbams Asuquo is known for his exceptional and captivating music. He is also a music producer and songwriter. Cobhams owns a record label called C.A.M.P which is an acronym for Cobhams Asuquo Music Productions. Cobhams, himself and Bez are currently signed to the label.
Omo Baba Olowo crooner, Davido aka David Adeleke was formerly signed to his brother’s record label, HKN GANG, before he founded his own DMW (Davido Music Wordwide). Talented artistes such as Mayokun, Dremo, Ichaba, Yonda, Peruzzi and Idowest are signed to DMW which has Dj Ecool as it official Dj.
Adekunle Gold was as a signee under Olamide’s YBNL, until he left to create his own label in 2018. The name of his new record label is Afro Urban Records and fans are eager to it blossom.
